Pia Douwes in Vienna
interviewer // pia
Interviewer: Hi Pia. Long time no see! Pia: omg you brought a bike from the Netherlands? No I rented it here. What a Wonderfull city. ‘Isn’t it amazing?’ I’m already jealous that you live here. ‘yes yes yes yes it’s amazing!!!’ and this is the theatre where you play every night. ‘it’s amazing right? This doesn’t happen much in your life. It’s so amazing.’ You’re an international star because you’re famous in Switzerland, Germany and Austria. ‘Not so much in Switzerland, but I did work there. But I’m famous in Germany, Austria and Holland and yeah that’s awesome because I always have work hahahaha’ And your laugh is also very recognizable. ‘yes yes I know hahahaha’ are we going to hear that laugh in the show or not? ‘No not in this one. It’s a heavy show.. well it’s not laugh entertainment. It’s a real strong story from Friedrich Durenmatt about der Besuch der Alten Dame and in the story there are different themes like; power, money, forgiveness, standing before your guilt and that kind of stuff. But it’s a wonderfull piece it’s fully booked every night. It’s party! A real party!! – puts bike away –
Well there you are up in the air as yourself! How amazing is that? It’s awesome because it never happens. You always hang up there as a role, so not as yourself. Look Pia Douwes and Uwe Kröger, and Uwe hangs on the other side. So we’re really represented as Pia and Uwe. We won’t see this show in Holland will we? No we won’t sadly enough. It’s amazing piece and almost every Dutchie loves it when they visited it but it’s too heavy for the Netherlands.
‘uhm yeah that’s kind of an angry face, but I need that face ofcourse. She’s been through a lot. She was banned from the city, in court she was called a whore, her love wouldn’t accept that it was his child and he also pushed her during a fight where she broke her leg and lost her child. Now she comes back and she wants revenge. She gives Gullen 2 billion euros if they murder Alfred Ill. So you can imagine.. that’s how the play starts’ [the usual talk about how she started in Wien, I’m not gonna translate it because it’s the same she always tells and about how beautiful Wien is]
[when they crossed the street] ‘Do you still want to live in Amsterdam?’ ‘I loveeeeee Amsterdam but no. My parents still live there tho! Isn’t it amazing that I still have them both? They’re married 62 years this year, 84 and 85 years old. That’s why I often fly to the Netherlands to see them’ Family is very important for you right? ‘Yes it is. My three brothers with their families are my support. So it’s really nice that I can see them a lot more now that I’m going to do Billy Elliot.’ Billy Elliot is something you’re going to in August right? ‘Yes I start in the middle of August, but I have to prepare before that haha with rope jumping and tap lessons!’ Then you will be a little one of us for a while. And which role are you going to play? I’m going to play Mrs Wilkinson. She’s the teacher who really believes in Billy’s talent it’s a woman who doesn’t like any shit talk.’
[some talk about wien being hella pretty] You played so many roles, which are the most important for you? Well duh Elisabeth ofcourse, Chicago was amazing but also Sunset Boulevard and Maria Callas. And I just did Next to Normal in Germany. OH LOOK IT’S A DOG. Do you have any pets? ‘WELL I can tell you I just got mommy of a dog, since 3 days! I’M A DOG MOMMY I’M A DOG MOMMY aaaaaaaaah I HAVE A CHILD. I’m so excited. I will get her next week. I’m just very excited hahaha. I love dogs so much. We had a family dog and we loved her all so much, but she passed away. So I was thinking about getting a dog but everyone was like; no you’re too busy etc. BUT I thought a dog will bring rest in my life, and that I go outside more often and that I have someone at home who I can share my love with. You don’t have a man at home right? ‘No I don’t that’s why I have taken a dog’ [the interviewer asks about not having a husband, having children and also about her burn out. but she told that in a lot of interviews so i won’t translate it]
‘We had one dog named Susa, and after that Guapo and now Sansa!’ Have you thought about it when you get really busy who will take care of her? Yes I have a support system, I figured it all out.
Do you often think; well will there ever be a man in my life? ‘yes ofcourse I do! But I’m not busy with it at the moment. Do you want a guy of your own age? Or is someone younger also fine? ‘I don’t know actually, if his soul is older than his actual age it’s fine. Do you have someone for me?’ No I was just looking around and… ‘No there is nothing here I already checked everyone out.’
[PIA FREAKING OUT ABOUT HOW SHE DOES NOT KNOW WHO WILL ALSO PLAY IN BILLY ELLIOT. And some talk about the statues in the park]
